Buying and Selling Used Vehicles in North Cyprus

When buying a used car or motorcycle in North Cyprus, examine the price, registration status and mechanical condition separately. Attractive photographs, a low-mileage claim or “no work needed” cannot replace an independent inspection.

Compare like with like

Consider make, model, production year, engine, transmission and mileage together. Do not explain a price difference between Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta by location alone. Service records, accident history, tyres, air conditioning and upcoming maintenance affect the total cost. Compare foreign-currency asking prices using the same exchange date and payment terms.

Four checks for a buyer

  1. Verify that the seller is the registered owner or an authorised representative. Match the vehicle identification number on the vehicle to its registration document. Do not circulate personal documents in public chat groups.
  2. Arrange an independent workshop check of cold starting, warning lights, leaks, brakes, tyres and air conditioning. Plan any test drive with the required permission and insurance.
  3. Ask whether the vehicle is locally registered, imported, awaiting customs processing or subject to another special status. Do not assume a special-status vehicle can be transferred to you; confirm with the relevant authority.
  4. Record the total amount, currency, included accessories, payment sequence and official transfer arrangements. Full payment or receiving the keys alone does not establish an official ownership transfer.

Writing a vehicle listing

Use recent exterior, interior, luggage-space and defect photographs. State the model year, fuel, transmission, mileage, maintenance and registration status clearly. Disclose replacement parts and known problems, and explain whether the price is negotiable. Do not publish a complete registration document or identity numbers. Update the listing after the sale.

Transfer and handover

Check current appointment and transaction information through the Traffic Department’s Vehicle Registration portal. Documents and fees may differ by transaction; do not treat an old fee list as current. Confirm that money has actually reached the receiving account and record the handover of keys and documents. KKTC AL SAT does not guarantee payment or provide an inspection guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check when buying a used car in North Cyprus?

Verify registration and chassis details, the seller’s authority, service history and outstanding obligations. Arrange an independent technical inspection; photographs, stated mileage or a test drive alone are not enough.

How should payment and vehicle transfer be arranged?

Confirm current transfer documents and appointment requirements with the responsible authority. Agree in writing on payment, official transfer and handover of keys and documents. A bank screenshot alone does not prove receipt of funds.

What information should a used-car listing include?

State the make, model, year, mileage, fuel and transmission, maintenance, known damage and price currency. Add current photographs and do not publish complete registration or identity documents.
