Buying a Used Phone in North Cyprus: IMEI Registration and Checks
On this page
The check most often skipped when buying a used phone in North Cyprus is IMEI registration. A device without suitable registration can have network problems. Together with battery, screen and account lock checks, these steps take less than five minutes.
What is the IMEI and why does it matter?
The IMEI is each phone’s unique identity number. The BTHK Mobile Device Registration System explains how devices used in North Cyprus are registered. Registration status can be checked on the BTHK online services page. Registration in another country does not prove the device’s status here.
Checks before handover
- Dial *#06# to see the IMEI and compare it with the box and invoice.
- Check the IMEI’s registration status with the BTHK service.
- See that the Apple ID or Google account is signed out and that the activation lock is gone by resetting the device.
- Test battery health, screen, cameras, Face ID or fingerprint, speaker and charging port.
Replaced parts and warranty
If the screen or battery has been replaced, ask whether it is an original part; some models show parts history in settings. Verify any warranty claim with the invoice and a maker check.
If you are selling
Back up the phone, sign out of every account and restore factory settings. In the listing, state model, storage, battery health, box and invoice, and defects. Do not show the IMEI in a public photograph; show it to the buyer at handover.
Frequently asked questions
