Plated, Unplated, TR and MA-Plated Cars; Left-Hand Drive in North Cyprus
On this page
North Cyprus car listings use terms such as “plated”, “unplated”, “TR-plated” and “MA-plated”. These describe the vehicle’s registration status and directly affect transfer, use and cost. Treat the plate type as seriously as the price.
TRNC-plated vehicles
These are registered in North Cyprus and have a plate issued. The transfer is completed at the Traffic Department vehicle registration office. When buying, check that the registration document matches the vehicle and look at road tax (seyrüsefer) and inspection status.
Unplated vehicles
These do not yet have a North Cyprus registration or plate. Customs, first registration and conformity conditions can require a separate process. Confirm with the authority before you buy whether that process falls to you, what it costs and how long it takes; do not accept “easy to plate” without documents.
TR-plated and MA-plated vehicles
A TR-plated vehicle is registered in Turkey. Its use and sale conditions in North Cyprus differ from a TRNC registration; do not assume it can be transferred to you and registered locally. MA-plated vehicles seen in listings also indicate a special status. In both cases, confirm the status, transferability and the conditions that apply to your nationality in writing with the Traffic Department and relevant authorities.
Left-hand-drive vehicles
Traffic drives on the left in North Cyprus and right-hand drive is standard. Registration, use and transfer conditions for left-hand-drive vehicles can change over time. Before buying, research the vehicle’s current status, whether it can be insured and whether you can sell it later. Also remember that visibility when overtaking is different.
